Kicking Cold and Flu Season's Fanny

Aromatherapy oils can help fight colds and flus

Cold and flu season is here, and shows no signs of letting up for awhile. With lower temperatures, our bodies have to adjust and this seems to place stress on our immune systems. Aromatherapy oils are a great way to combat cold and flu symptoms. If you want to kick cold and flu season's butt, read on for aromatherapy suggestions.

Aid your immune system while kicking the cold and flu season

Even with aromatherapy oils, you still might get the flu but you may only have a small percentage of the symptoms. One winter, my friend and I got what appeared to be the same flu. I used my aromatherapy oils as directed below and only had a slightly congested head. My friend had a fever, cough, runny nose and lung congestion without the oil, using traditional over-the-counter symptom relievers. You can use the healing power of plants with aromatherapy to better your daily life. Imagine a plant that can kill bacteria in its native environment. The makers of essential oil distill out that bacteria-killing ability from the plant and make it into a super-concentrated, clear, light oil that is readily absorbed into the skin.

Aromatherapy oils have that incredible concentration and many have anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. If you fill the average living room with rosemary leaves and distill it down to the oil, you end up with four cups of rosemary oil.

Essential oils also have 100 different healthful properties to help with your health issues. The oils can be purchased online or in our office. We only carry organic essential oils to avoid the negative effects of herbicides and pesticides.

The oils to beat back cold and flu symptoms

The oils I recommend most for kicking cold and flu symptoms are rosemary, thyme, oregano, and peppermint. There may be ones that work better for you, like eucalyptus (which has a menthol smell and can help with breathing), but these are my go-to oils.

Rosemary oil

This is a great oil for congestion. I apply it topically above my eyebrows for sinus congestion, topically on my throat for sore throat, and topically on my chest for a chest cold. I apply it ten times a day if I feel symptoms and 90 percent of them disappear.

Thyme oil

I apply it on my breast bone where my ribs meet in the front and it stimulates my immune system. I put a couple of drops in a capsule and take with food three times a day to knock out a strong flu or cold.

Oregano oil

This powerful for killing bacteria and viruses, but it burns the skin if applied directly. Carefully put two drops in a capsule twice a day for a strong cold or flu and take with food. I find that doing that three times a day for a week eliminates the cold handily.

Peppermint oil

This is good for stomach or intestinal flu. Apply to the stomach or intestines topically as often as you feel uncomfortable. You may want to use a carrier oil for this oil too.To take internally, put one or two drops in a capsule three times a day with food to take it orally.

Which oils will you use to kick colds and flus?

The oils I listed are potent ways to handle the cold and flu viruses and unlike over the counter medication, boost the immune system instead of masking symptoms. They provide a way to help your body without straining your kidneys and liver. The strain is from processing out the allopathic medicine. By using the plant in its entirety, it gives your body balanced, healthy support. For more information, call Glen Larsen at 661-575-7135.
